What is Sumi-e?

Sumi-e painting is a traditional Japanese Art of concentration, clarity and simplicity, through the use of ink, brush and paper.  Sumi-e, or Suibokuga, painting has its origins in ancient China, but has been practiced in Japan since the eighth century. By the fourteenth century it had been adopted as one of the Zen arts.

Once a stroke is on the paper, it cannot be removed nor worked over; therefore each stroke gives away the Artist’s inner experience.  Using infinite shades of grey, the Artist can capture the very essence of an object.

The use of empty space has deep meaning in sumi-e, and the signature and hanko (seal) are part of the composition.  Sumi-e is a meditative art, bringing peace to the heart and calm to the mind.  It is an art that can be enjoyed your whole life through.
